Lesson 1
Welcome: how Byzantine music is written
Byzantine chant is written with neumes, small signs above the text. A neume is not a letter that fixes one pitch. It is a step: it tells the singer to stay, go up, or go down from the note before.
You do not need to know Greek to begin. Read the lesson, then open a piece and follow the player. The player shows which neume is sounding, so you can connect the sign with the sound.
Most of the music on this site is written for a choir or a single chanter. Start slowly. One sign and one step at a time is enough.
